USADSF Spotlight with Noah - Special Edition #2

Noah: Hello, welcome to USADSF Spotlight special edition. I am Noah Valencia. The answer to yesterday's trivia Thursday question of “When did the United States of America first participate in the International Silent Games?” is 1935.

Noah: 1935 is the year when the United States discussed and determined that they will send two athletes. The two athletes’ names are: John Chudzikiewicz and Wayne Otten.

Image: John Chudzikiewicz is shown as he is wearing a USA uniform and attempting to throw a Javelin. The picture is in black and white.

Image: Wayne Otten is standing and looking to his right while wearing a USA sweater. An unnamed man stands beside him and is looking to his right too. The picture is in black and white.

Noah: Both participated in athletics. John Chudzikiewicz participated in three different events. 1) Javelin where he won a gold medal. 2) Shot put where he won a silver medal. 3) Discus throw which he failed to win any medal in this event.

Noah: As for Wayne Otten, he participated in two events. 1) 100 meters which he won a bronze medal. 2) 200 meters where he won a silver medal.

Noah: We sent two athletes there and they returned with 4 medals. 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.

Noah: I am excited to announce that we have researched and found possibly the first picture that was taken at Deaflympics (formerly called as the International Silent Games) in which the United States played in. The picture shows John and Wayne. I want to thank Brettmann University in London, England for discovering this picture so I am very excited to share it with you all today. The picture was taken in 1935 and it shows John attempting to throw a javelin while on the sideline, standing a person wearing a sweater with “USA”, watching John, is Wayne, supporting him. It was the first picture so I am excited to share it with you.

Pictures zoom out from a rectangle view of a sweater with “USA” on it to the whole picture as it shows few people standing on the sideline watching John Chudzikiewicz attempting to throw a javelin. The picture was scanned and it is in black and white. On the lower right corner, there is a headline that gives credit to Getty Images and Brettmann University.

Noah: An amazing picture! From 1935 when we first brought athletes to the games to present, in the year of 2020, with our upcoming next 2021 Deaflympics in Brazil. We look forward to it. Until then.
