Deaflympian Signs Letter of Intend for Appalachian State

Former United States Deaflympian Kate Ward signed a National Letter of intend to attend the Appalachian State University as an athlete on the women's soccer team. Ward was the youngest female athlete on the soccer team and she made history at the 2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei when she was the youngest soccer player to score in the Deaflympics at the age of 15 years, seven months, and 26 days old when she scored in a 7-0 victory over Denmark on September 7, 2009. In spite of her youth Ward was one of the starters on the gold-medal winning team in Taipei. She was one of the athletes that scored a goal in the 4-0 defeat of Germany in the Deaflympic finals. In signing the National Letter of intend for ASU, Ward will enter a NCAA Division I program that finished last season at 6-11-2. Ward's expertise in international competition will help her become an immediate contributor to the program. ASU coach Sarah Strickland said this of Ward: "Kate has an unbelievable touch and has the ability to play a great final pass." "She is a fantastic young woman that we expect to see grow tremendously at Appalachian," added Strickland. USADSF and USA Deaf Soccer congratulates Ward on this accomplishment!
