Champs! U.S. Women’s Team Wins Maryland Tournament

Competing against A, BB, and B teams at the BVC February Tournament, the US Team only dropped one game against familiar opponent, J-Stroke [A] in their first round of the day. Having already beaten them 2-0 in January, the US Team repeated that win in the first round of pool play 2-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-20). Their next match versus BB team, Mully’s Galaxy was an easy 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-11, 25-12). The last win of pool play was a 3-0 win over Custom Glass [A] (25-23, 25-18, 25-14). As they women advanced to the playoffs, their semifinal match-up was against Shockum [B]. Winning 2-0 (25-15, 25-9), the US Team moved on to the finals. They faced Custom Glass once again and surfaced as tournament champions with a 2-0 win (25-16, 25-10). Coming from a tournament where they finished with a record of 3-5, libero Shana Lehmann expressed that “[the team] has been improving every time [they] play together and that definitely showed on the court.” Team captain and outside hitter Kristina Burke adds that while the US didn’t play against teams at their level, it was good to see where they stand and identify the areas that need work. Next, the US Team looks forward to competing in Fredrick, Maryland March 3 at the William Talley Rec Center. Written by Emma Racila
